A new study on Monday said that there is less plastic garbage in the ocean than scientists previously thought, but they may persist for a long time.
The model study estimates that plastic fragments larger than 25 mm (1 inch) account for over 95% of floating plastic in the ocean.
While most plastic particles in the ocean are small, the total mass of these microplastics (defined as less than 5 mm (0.2 inches)) is relatively low.
According to a study published in the journal Nature Geoscience, the predominance of larger floating pieces suggests that the total amount of plastic in the ocean is "much lower" than previously thought.
It is estimated that plastic pollution in the ocean exceeds 25 million tons, with 250,000 tons floating on the sea surface.
However, the study states that the amount of plastic on the ocean surface is much higher, around 3 million tons.
Large pieces of plastic float on the sea surface, which helps with cleanup efforts.
Co-author of the study, Erik van Sebille from Utrecht University in the Netherlands, said in a statement: "Large floating chunks on the surface are easier to clean up than microplastics."
The results are grim. Based on a 3D model of the ocean, the study used a large amount of observational data and measurement data collected from surface waters, beaches, and deep seas from 1980 to 2020.
